We work to educate, engage, and activate Texans through public education policy and advocacy initiatives. Our statewide advocacy teams work in communities throughout the state to raise the voices of parents, teachers, community leaders, business owners, and students who care about the future of public education.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Writer and Content Developer to join our team and play a pivotal role in shaping our communication and advocacy efforts. If you have a passion for storytelling and a knack for crafting engaging content, we want to hear from you!
About the Role
The Senior Writer and Content Developer will be responsible for creating, managing, and optimizing compelling content across various platforms that furthers storytelling and underscores the mission and goals of the organization, including our website, print materials, and digital communications. This role requires a versatile individual who can excel in writing, editing, project management, and vendor coordination, with a strong understanding of content strategy and online publication best practices.
Setting: This is a full-time, in-person role based in our Austin, TX office. Remote work is not available for this position.
Responsibilities:
Content Creation & Editing:
- Write and edit high-quality, original content for a variety of purposes, including website copy, blog posts, newsletters, workshops and webinars, reports, press releases, and advocacy materials
- Ensure all content is accurate, clear, concise, and aligned with the organization's messaging and brand voice
- Strive to deliver inspiring, experiential, and practical content, depending on the audience and goal
- Proofread and edit content for AP style, grammar, style, and consistency.
Project Management:
- Manage content projects from conception to completion, including website development, print publications, and digital campaigns.
- Develop and maintain project timelines, budgets, and deliverables.
- Effectively communicate project status and updates to internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Listen in meetings and translate action items into organized project plans with detailed next steps for internal and external team members
Website & Digital Content Management:
- Optimize website content for search engines (SEO) and user experience.
- Co-manage website content on WordPress, make updates, and ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Implement content strategies to drive website traffic and engagement.
- Understand and utilize best practices for social media content.
Print Production:
- Coordinate print projects from bid to delivery, including paper selection, design approvals, and press checks.
Vendor & Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with internal teams, including policy, communications, marketing, advocacy, and government relations, to ensure consistent messaging and effective project execution.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, including designers, printers, and web developers.
- Contribute to a positive and collaborative team environment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in writing, editing, and content production, preferably in an association, non-profit, or advocacy organization.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong command of grammar, style, and AP style.
- Proven experience in project management, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Effective self-management skills and an ability to independently oversee projects across multiple departments.
- Strong understanding of SEO and online content optimization.
- Familiarity with website content management systems (CMS).
- Knowledge of print production processes and vendor management.

- A genuine interest in and commitment to Texas public education advocacy.
- Flexibility in adjusting writing style to suit various audiences.
- Experience with email marketing platforms.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to time-sensitive issues
- Ability to communicate with diverse audiences and handle sensitive topics with tact and diplomacy.
- Familiarity with Texas education policy and the legislative process is a plus.
