Raise Your Hand Texas is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to advocating for high-quality K-12 public education in Texas. We work to educate, engage, and activate Texans through public education policy and advocacy initiatives. Our statewide advocacy teams work in communities throughout the state to raise the voices of parents, teachers, community leaders, business owners, and students who care about the future of public education.

 Position Summary: 

As a Regional Advocacy Director, you will help build and mobilize a robust pro-public education constituency across the state. You will serve as a connector, organizer, and leader who brings together educators, parents, community leaders, and advocates to help strengthen public schools.

The ideal candidate will combine a deep optimism about the capacity of ordinary people to shape policy outcomes with a pragmatic political orientation. They will have a strong appetite for developing relationships with a diverse array of people, especially those inside and connected to public schools, and a demonstrated track record of motivating people to work towards a shared goal. 

In this role, you will: 

  • Foster a pro-public education political climate and build a culture of civic engagement in your region by finding, developing, and activating public education supporters
  • Meet and collaborate with at least 8-10 public education stakeholders and community members per week
  • Cultivate local leaders and coach advocate teams to support organizational issue campaigns at the state level
  • Grow usership of the organization’s digital advocacy tools
  • Collaborate with organizations and individuals to support broad-based get-out-the-vote efforts and increased voter awareness of public education issues
  • Support the creation of local earned and sponsored news content, in partnership with our communications team
  • Elevate the public profile of the organization by representing it in education, civic, philanthropic, and business settings
  • Understand key challenges and opportunities in public education in your region so as to help inform the organization’s policy knowledge and programmatic objectives
  • Report and track activities in NationBuilder 

Qualifications: 

  • A passion for educational equity and excellence in Texas
  • 5+ years of experience in education, civic engagement, advocacy non-profit, public policy, politics, social work, or related field, required
  • Demonstrated ability to create, coach, and motivate individuals and teams, as well as develop relationships with people from a wide range of backgrounds (ethnic, socioeconomic, professional, educational, and generational)
  • Excellent written, oral, and listening communication skills, as well as strong presentation skills
  • Desire to understand public education policy and ability to translate it to various audiences,
  • Ability and willingness to work in a flexible, highly independent setting
  • Availability to travel in the service area (mostly regional), and occasionally work weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Slack

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Texas communities and public education landscape, existing relationships a plus
  • Prior advocacy experience
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Proficiency in customer relations management software (e.g. Salesforce, NationBuilder) and digital grassroots advocacy tools (e.g. Phone2Action, UJoin)
